Walkability
If there is one thing that separates Birmingham from other communities, it is walkability. Here, you can step out your front door and in a matter of minutes find yourself in a bustling downtown, a beautiful park, or a friend’s home. Birmingham has made some great strides here, but there is still much to do. Too many intersections are dangerous for pedestrians, too many neighborhood streets see unsafe driving speeds, and too little accommodation is made for our youth on bikes or scooters.
These problems are hardly intractable. Most have solutions which are cheap, fast, and if need be, reversible. The primary challenge is to simply to get the ball rolling. The culmination of these efforts will be a city which is safer, quieter, and friendlier. “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
Let’s start small, and let’s start now.
